The title is new. The job is not.
A Forward Deployed Engineer, or FDE, embeds with a customer, learns their problem in the room where it lives, and ships a working answer. Not a slide. Not a recommendation for someone else to build later. A running system that changes a decision. Palantir named the role. They called their version "Delta" and framed it around one idea, "one customer, many capabilities." Their own job posts compare the FDE to a startup CTO, sitting inside a client, owning the outcome end to end. That is the shape of the work.
I have been doing that motion for most of my career. I just did not have a clean name for it.
As a CEO, CIO, and CISO, five times over, I was rarely handed a well-scoped ticket. I was handed a mess. A stalled program. A board that wanted a straight answer on risk. A security incident that did not care about org charts. The work was always the same. Get in close. Understand the actual problem, not the reported one. Decide. Build the thing that moves it. Own whether it worked.
That is an FDE. The engineer who goes to the front line and does not leave until the problem is solved.
Why the role is showing up now
Two things happened at once. AI got powerful enough to matter, and hard enough to deploy that most companies cannot cross the last mile alone.
Look at the numbers. An MIT NANDA report from August 2025 found that about 95 percent of enterprise generative AI pilots delivered no measurable impact on profit and loss. The report has drawn some methodological criticism, so hold it loosely. But the direction is hard to argue with. The same report pointed at the cause. It was not model quality. It was the "learning gap," the flawed work of wiring AI into how a business actually runs. It also found that buying or partnering succeeded around 67 percent of the time, while internal builds worked about a third as often.
Gartner sees the same wall. It predicted that at least 30 percent of generative AI projects would be abandoned after proof of concept by the end of 2025. In June 2025 it went further and predicted that more than 40 percent of agentic AI projects would be canceled by the end of 2027.
Read those together. The models work. The deployments fail. The gap is people who can stand between a boardroom and a codebase and close it.
The market noticed. Andreessen Horowitz called the FDE "the hottest job in tech" in 2025. The Pragmatic Engineer ran a long piece on it that same August. OpenAI built a Forward Deployed Engineering team and posted base pay between 162,000 and 280,000 dollars plus equity. In May 2026 OpenAI launched a dedicated deployment company with more than 4 billion dollars behind it and acquired roughly 150 forward deployed engineers. When the labs start paying for the last mile, the last mile is where the value is.
The boardroom was always the front line
Here is the part people miss. The FDE is drawn as a technical role. It is really a translation role with a build attached.
The hard part of an AI or cybersecurity project is almost never the code in isolation. It is that the people who understand the business risk cannot see the system, and the people who can build the system cannot see the risk. A breach costs money. IBM has pegged the average at 4.88 million dollars. A board feels that number. It does not feel a model routing config. Someone has to hold both at the same time and act.
I have spent years in that seat. I hold the certifications that force the discipline, CISSP, ISSAP, and ISSMP, for more than twenty years. I run incident-response tabletops for executives, where the point is to make senior leaders decide under pressure before a real attacker makes them. And I still build. I ship production AI systems myself, wiring Claude, GPT, and Gemini to real payment and data infrastructure. Not demos. Systems that take live actions.
That combination is the FDE. Builder enough to ship. Senior enough to sit with a board and say what is true, including when the true answer is "do not do this yet."
What this means for you
If your AI or security program is stuck between a good idea and a working system, the missing piece is probably not a bigger model or another consulting deck. It is someone who will embed, decide, and ship, and stand behind the result.
